The Western census regions offer the greatest potential for Costa Rica.3 Together, the Pacific and Mountain regions are home to 31.7% of Costa Rica�s best prospects, compared with 24.0% of other travelers.
Residents of the Pacific and Mountain regions have the highest propensity for interest in travel to Costa Rica; they are 1.49 times and 1.29 times as likely as all U.S. adults to be Costa Rica�s best prospects (indexes of 149 and 129, respectively). 4 Residents of the New England region also demonstrate above average propensity for interest in visiting Costa Rica. The East South Central region demonstrates the lowest propensity for interest in travel to Costa Rica.
California is the single most important state for Costa Rica. As such, it should receive the highest level of attention on the part of the ICT; 17.0% of best prospects live in California. To put this figure in perspective, only three other states�Florida (6.1%), New York (5.7%), and Texas (5.4%)�are home to more than 5% of Costa Rica�s best prospects.
Costa Rica�s best prospects tend to be urban dwellers. More than 8 in 10 (81.7%) reside in metropolitan areas with populations of a half million or more, and 60.4% reside in areas with populations of 2 million or more. The five DMAs5 in which the greatest numbers of prospective travelers to Costa Rica reside are New York (7.5%); San Francisco (6.6%); Los Angeles (5.8%); Washington, D.C. (4.4%); and Boston (3.4%).
