At the same time that Tico surfers gain experience in national and international tournaments the results become more noticeable. Like most of the things, this is a process. To talk about this, we met the president of the Costa Rican Surf Federation (FSC) Jose Ure�a.
What is the result after the World Championship of France?
I think that the result is always positive since many young surfers improve their level through this competitions and that is evident. But from the point of view of a Federation we are always trying to increase the demand. Some of the surfer might need more confidence, since this kind of tournament could be kind of intimidating and our surfers need to improve in that aspect.
I noticed that in other competitions they surf in a more relaxed way and that this way they can achieve better results. We have to guide them in order to handle this situation better and for them not to get suck.
What are the goals of the Federation?
It is important to maintain what we have achieved by now, sport and organization wise. But we should not settle with that since Surf is one of the major attractions of this country. We must keep that in mind. We are communicating this Idea to all the local businesses, in order to work together in projects that reflect the image of Jac� as a place where surfing is predominant.
Many places around the world recognize us in that way and that�s why we try to hold on to that concept. We have the beaches, the waves, the weather and the structure to make it real, but we need the support of the local companies, to achieve it. If we, who are locals, don�t do it, nobody will.
What are the possibilities to Costa Rica to host the next World Championship Surf?
We have all the chances. A tournament of this size is not given to anyone and as I just said, we have all the conditions and requirements to host an event like this. The benefits are many, on a sport level and also on a social one, giving us the reputation that we want to have, taking advantage of our famous features. it�s good to remember that surfing isn�t just a sport, it is also a life style that many people choose.
It is just about putting together a bunch of surfing advertisement but also about making all the arrangements to prepare the place to be able to handle an event like this. The World Championship is an event that we can host, it is an event that brings people from more than 40 countries and all that is implied with that. We are really looking forward for this to happen.
