Costa Rica's ancient peoples created some beautiful and unusual art. To see it, you don't have to go back in time. You can visit one of the country's museums.
The National Museum in San Jose is a great place to start. It has some of the oldest art in Costa Rica.
This museum houses treasures from the lost civilization of Guayabo. These items include golden bells, a copper and gold frog, pieces of pottery, and carved stone tablets. The National Museum also displays one of Costa Rica's great mysteries perfectly round spheres (balk) made of solid granite have been found only in Costa Rica. Some spheres weigh as much as 16 tons and are 8 feet across! No one knows how or why ancient people created these amazing spheres. Many can be seen in lawns and fields across the country.
