Costa Rican Art Museum Founded in 1977, the museum houses a permanent collection of some of the most important works in the history of the fine arts in Costa Rica. Besides a diverse, robust, and outstanding permanent collection of woodcuts, wooden sculptures, and 19th- and 20th-century paintings, revolving exhibitions of contemporary artists are also shown. The Salon Dorado (Golden Hall) on the second floor depicts the nation's history from pre-Columbian times through the 1940s.
Done in stucco and bronze patina, the resplendent mural was constructed during Costa Rica's "muralist" period by French sculptor Louis Feron. Lovers of chamber music will also appreciate free concerts occasionally given in the Salon Dorado. Sabana Park, facing the museum, was formerly an airport; the Spanish-colonial style building housing the museum was once the airport terminal. Admission is free on Sunday.
