Since the 50s, the Churchill is sold in the Puntarenas. Its a symbol of the Pearl of the Pacific. It certainly exceeds its fame over the ceviche (raw fish cooked in lemon, onion, cilantro and sweet pepper) and other dishes prepared from local fish and seafood.
Although, the origin of the famous Churchill (slush with ice cream, powder milk, condensed milk and other ingredients) is not clear, it is true that if you go through the Paseo de los Turistas in Puntarenas, you can not resist the temptation to try this refreshing, which now its provided in its light form.
A Churchill
Churchill
One of the nicest weekends we went to the Pearl of the Pacific. We passed through the six kiosks that offer Churchills. There tourists are from various parts of the country and they enjoy this family slush that has over 50 years of history.
Mar del Plata, Rancho Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Acapulco, Costa Azul and El Sesteo are the scramble kiosks that offer the visitors the best Churchill versions: The Colossus that is the classic, The Tamarind, The Two or Three Milk, Mixed Fruit, Pineapple and the Light , according to vendors, its sold a lot.
What is a Churchill?
This is like slush, but served in a glass or cup. Andalusia is scraping ice with syrup, milk powder, condensed milk and ice cream. This is the original recipe, which led to the Churchill's called Colossus.
Over the years, retailers increased their offer to attract customers by adding fruits. For example, the kiosk Acapulco offers a Churchill with preserved tamarind, which has a rich acid flavor that mixes with fresh syrup. While in the Mar del Plata, where the tour began, we tested the light version.
And for the price, do not worry about looking for the best price on the kiosks, all the retailers agreed to have the same fee. To take into account the colossal costs ₡2.200 today. Whereas 50 years ago, it had a price of only ₡1.
Without a Churchill" it is not stroll
Coming to Puntarenas and not eating a Churchill or walking Its not coming to Puntarenas, said Xiomara Gonzlez Acua, a resident of San Rafael Arriba de Desamparados. She said that while enjoying in a kiosk (El Sesteo) with her daughter Karol Morales, who had never tasted the treat, and which she loved.
Xiomara said that since her childhood, when her parents brought her to Puntarenas, one of her greatest satisfactions was eating a Churchill.
Paseo de los Turistas
Paseo de los Turistas
The same was expressed by many of the tourists who filled the kiosks after twelve noon, while a modern cruise ship was docked behind them.
Miguel ngel Renna, president of the Chamber of Puntarenas Tourism, said this is an icon of the city, referring to the tradition of the Churchill. As a result, El Paseo de los Turistas always has visitors from all over the country. Now, other businesses, close to the kiosks, are also offering their own versions of the Churchill, such as the new and very large Chinese restaurant Pango.
So, if you want to have a rich ride this time, do not think too much and go to Puntarenas. It is a site that does not lose its charm and it strives every day to receive visitors with the best benefits.
Why churchill?
There are different versions about the name of this slush. According to Flander Rodriguez, in the kiosk El Sesteo, it is said that once, a person came and told a waiter to give the slush that was as equal as eating Churchill. This person was certainly a foreigner who had a strong resemblance to Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister of England by that time.
