Fortune magazine named continental as one of the ten "creen Giants," companies whose environmental policies exceed governmental requirements. Continental Airlines announced the launching of a program to offset carbon dioxide emissions, developed in collaboration with Sustainable Travel International, non-profit organization that involves its passengers actively.
With the aim of minimizing the environmental impact both of its fleet and their ground service equipment, Continental shall keep investing in technology and the most efficient operation procedures possible. With a significant abatement of emissions and fuel consumption on of its airplanes, Continental has reduced around 75 per cent of the nitrogen dioxide emissions produced by land equipment at its largest operations center, in the city of Houston, by replacing conventional equipment with electric one and putting other state of the art technology in action.
These tools are currently being tested to determine if it's possible to use them in cola climates too. The program, of a voluntary character, allows clients in any part of the world to visualize the profile of carbon dioxide emissions of the itinerary they have reserved (calculated by Sustainable Travel International as a function of fuel consumption of Continental's airplanes), and make a donation to Sustainable Travel International.
