When you think of holidays that are celebrated with fireworks, do you ever think of Easter? Costa Ricans do. Ticos celebrate several religious holidays throughout the year, but Easter is by far the biggest.
Procesi�n del Santo Entierro The fireworks begin at dawn on Easter morning and continue all day and night. People attend colorful religious processions, bullfights rodeos, and dances. Most businesses close on the Wednesday before Easter. On Thursday and Friday, the rest of the country shuts down. No one works or goes to school. Buses don't run again until Saturday, the day before Easter. Many families use this time off from school and work to take a vacation somewhere.
Easter is a Christian holiday, and nine out of ten Costa Ricans are Roman Catholic�one form of Christianity. Spanish settlers brought this religion with them when they came to Costa Rica. Jamaican settlers introduced the Protestant religion (another form of Christianity) to Costa Rica. About half of all Protestants live on the Caribbean coast, where Jamaicans first settled.
