Its construction took four years, was inaugurated on December 21, 1975, when it moved from La Sabana by the pressures of sports organizations. The name of Tobias Bolanos Palma, as a tribute to a Costa Rican pilot who fought in the First World War as part of the French army. For his services, France gave him a recognition and a lifetime pension.

The above data give us the information that during the year 2006, there were reported 120 operations with a movement of 216 passengers per day. Likewise during 2007 an average 138 operations have been reported with 315 passengers per day. We can see that during 2007 the Airport has experienced an increase of a 15% as for the operations and a 46% in transfer of passengers.
